LES SMITH – THIS IS ME

MUSIC IS MY HEART AND MY SOUL. IT WILL ALWAYS BE PLAYING ALONGSIDE ME.

EARLY LIFE

I was surrounded by music from an early age.

My father was a seafaring man and would often play sea shanties on his accordion. My mother was brought up on a farm and she loved country music, which she played when I was a child. Both of my parents have inspired me immensely.

FROM INSPIRATION CAME PASSION

My four-beat rhythm is unusual in country music. I developed a liking to this while travelling to my grandparents farm on a train when I was young. I replicated the rhythm of the sound of the wheels hitting the tracks on an old milk can with a horseshoe.

MY INFLUENCES

The tunes of various artists, in particular Hank Williams, Conway Twitty, Dwight Yoakhman, Alan Jackson and the Mavericks have influenced the way that I play and write my songs.

MY PREFERED EQUIPMENT

I like the deep, rich quality of an electric-acoustic guitar. I find that I am able to pick lead on these guitars on songs needing instrumentals. I am partial to Grench, Lorenzo and Gibson makes.
